New York police enter Columbia University to break up pro-Palestinian protest
For much of the weekslong protest at Columbia University, leaders have remained silent
The university's president has promised Congress that she would crack down on unsanctioned protests
New York police entered Columbia University on Wednesday to break up a pro-Palestinian protest that has been ongoing for weeks. The protest began in April 2024 when students occupied a building on campus to demand that the university divest from companies that do business with Israel.
The university's president, Lee Bollinger, has promised Congress that she would crack down on unsanctioned protests. In a letter to Congress, Bollinger said that the university "must take all necessary steps to ensure that our campus is a safe and welcoming place for all students." The letter also said that if the students do not leave the building, “the university will have to consider all of its options, including seeking injunctive relief and/or taking disciplinary action against the students involved.”
The students have refused to leave the building, and the protest has continued for weeks. The students have set up an encampment on campus, and they have been holding rallies and protests. The protest has been largely peaceful, but there have been some incidents of violence.
The university has not taken any action to remove the students from the building, and it is unclear when or if the protest will end.
