Zverev Survives Marathon Match, Reaches French Open Fourth Round
German Fourth Seed Defeats Griekspoor in Five-Set Classic
Alexander Zverev's Roland Garros title hopes hung by a thread on Saturday as he survived a marathon match to beat Tallon Griekspoor 3-6 6-4 6-2 4-6 7-63 in the French Open third round. The German fourth seed was on the brink of defeat after losing the fourth set, but he rallied to take the decider in a tiebreak.
Zverev had two chances to get back to 1-1 but fluffed them both, and his mood darkened further when Griekspoor teased him with slices and drop shots.
But the 25-year-old German showed his fighting spirit to level the match and take the third set before Griekspoor hit back to force a decider.
Zverev saved a break point in the 10th game of the fifth set and then broke Griekspoor's serve in the following game to set up a match point.
The German sealed the victory on his second match point when Griekspoor's backhand went wide.
Zverev will now face Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round.
